A Story That Will Stay With You

What happens when everything you believe in is shattered and you have to find a way to keep going? You Gotta Take What Comes is a powerful memoir of survival, determination and resilience by author Sherri L. Rose. This deeply personal story follows her journey through trauma, healing, and recovery after volunteering with Cambodian refugees in Thailand.

Her story is not just about what she endured; it’s about how she reclaimed her life.

Book Synopsis

Recently divorced pediatric nurse practitioner Sherri L. Rose is invited to join the aid efforts of the International Committee of the Red Cross during the Cambodian refugee crisis in 1979. After unexpected traumatic events during her volunteer journey, she faces a long, nonlinear recovery.

Her memoir supplements this story of resilience with picturesque moments from her childhood, contrasting her exacting endeavor to find her footing in her new reality with the kindness and structure of her Southern Baptist upbringing. She reflects on a year of recovery through the lens of her mother’s mantra: “You gotta take what comes.”
